With April 1st now less than 3 months away, British artist Martin Boyce has been taking the opportunity to prepare for the unveiling of his greatest art installation ever – a visual poem – known simply as ‘Bean’.

Martin Boyce Turner Prize Winner Following this year’s (2011) Turner Prize for an installation consisting of a park bin and some other bits and bobs, Martin Boyce’s meteoric rise to fame, he acknowledges, does have its downsides. He is a reluctant star. This is not surprising since he will now be joining a lengthening list of entities (Damien Hirst, Simon Cowell, Primark) that will be remembered for producing a pile of old shit.

Being remembered for one’s art is one thing, but being remembered for a pile of old shit is quite another.

Asked by our editor what historical and architectural significance ‘Bean’ was to imply, Boyce simply replied, ‘It’s a bean.’

Whether ‘Bean’ will be ‘baked’, ‘refried’ or simply ‘has’, remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure, Boyce will be full of beans (ha, ha, ha) when his next £25,000 jackpot makes an appearance in his bank account.

“He who shits last laughs loudest” as they say.
